n.
A large region of the parietal and temporal lobes of the left cerebral hemisphere, thought to be essential for understanding and formulating coherent, propositional speech. Also called sensory speech center, Wernicke's area.

Wernicke's center
Etymology: Karl Wernicke; Gk, kentron, center
a sensory speech center located in the posterior temporal gyrus and adjacent angular gyrus in the dominant hemisphere. Wernicke observed in 1874 that patients with brain damage in that area also suffered a loss of speech comprehension. Also called Wernicke's field, Wernicke's zone. See also speech centers.
