Cicuta a genus of the plant family Apiaceae; these plants contain a toxic alcohol, cicutoxin, which causes sudden death in grazing livestock, often within minutes of being eaten. Roots and tubers are most toxic. Clinical signs include diarrhea, frothing at the mouth and convulsions. Includes C. bolanderi (water hemlock), C. bulbifera, C. californica, C. curtisii, C. douglasii, C. maculata, C. mackenziana, C. occidentalis, C. vagans (cowbane), C. virosa.
