vitronectin /vit·ro·nec·tin/ (vit″ro-nek´tin) an adhesive glycoprotein whose many functions include regulation of the coagulation, fibrinolytic, and complement cascades, also playing a role in hemostasis, wound healing, tissue remodeling, and cancer, and promoting adhesion, spreading, and migration of cells. It has been shown to be identical to S protein, which was identified as a complement inhibitor acting to prevent insertion of the membrane attack complex into the membrane. vitronectin [vit′ro-nek′tin] a multifunctional adhesive glycoprotein found in serum and various tissues. Its functions include regulation of the coagulation, fibrinolytic, and complement cascades, and it plays a role in hemostasis, wound healing, tissue remodeling, and cancer. It mediates the inflammatory and repair reactions at sites of tissue injury and promotes adhesion, spreading, and migration of cells. It has been shown to be identical to S protein, which was identified as an inhibitor of complement activation, binding the membrane attack complex and preventing its insertion into the membrane. vitronectin an adhesive protein in plasma.
