larva /lar·va/ (lahr´vah) pl. lar´vae [L.] an independent, motile, sometimes feeding, developmental stage in the life history of an animal. larva cur´rens a variant of larva migrans caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, in which the progression of the linear lesion is much more rapid. cutaneous larva migrans , larva mi´grans creeping eruption; a convoluted threadlike pruritic, erythematous, papular or vesicular skin eruption that appears to migrate, caused by burrowing beneath the skin of roundworm larvae, particularly Ancylostoma larvae . Also applied to similar lesions caused by other parasites. ocular larva migrans infection of the eye with larvae of Toxocara canis or T. cati, which may lodge in the choroid or retina or migrate to the vitreous; on the death of the larvae, a granulomatous inflammation occurs, the lesion varying from a translucent elevation of the retina to massive retinal detachment and pseudoglioma. visceral larva migrans a condition due to prolonged migration of nematode larvae in human tissue other than skin; commonly caused by the larvae of Toxocara canis or T. cati, which do not complete their life cycle in humans.
Visceral larva migrans (VLM) Another name for toxocariasis. The name is derived from the life cycle of the organism. Mentioned in: Roundworm Infections visceral larva migrans, infestation with parasitic larvae, Toxocara, or, occasionally, Ascaris, Strongyloides, or other nematodes. See also toxocariasis. larva an independent, immature stage in a life cycle in which the stage is unlike the parent and must undergo changes in form and size to reach the adult stage. There may be one or several, three is common, larval stages in the one life cycle. In fish larvae are also called fry. larva currens a variant of larva migrans caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, in which the linear progress of the lesions is much more rapid. cutaneous larva migrans creeping eruption; a convoluted, thread-like skin eruption in humans and other species which appears to migrate; caused by the burrowing beneath the skin of roundworm larvae, particularly Ancylostoma, Strongyloides and Gnathostoma spp. A. braziliense, A. caninum, B. phlebotomum can cause the disease. ocular larva migrans infection of the eye with the larvae of the roundworm Toxocara canis or T. cati, which may lodge in the choroid or retina or migrate to the vitreous; on the death of the larvae, a granulomatous inflammation occurs, the lesion varying from a translucent elevation of the retina to massive retinal detachment and pseudoglioma. visceral larva migrans a condition due to prolonged migration of larvae of animal nematodes in human tissues other than skin, commonly caused by larvae of the roundworms Toxocara canis and T. cati. visceral pertaining to a viscus. visceral arch mesenchymal structures in the region of the embryonic pharynx and visible on the ventrolateral aspect of the head; give rise to skeletal elements, larynx and other structures of the head. visceral cleft temporary depressions between the visceral arches of the embryo. visceral efferent system that part of the autonomic nervous system which provides motor innervation to the viscera. visceral gout see gout. visceral granulomatosis a disease of farmed and freeliving freshwater and marine fish caused by the fungus Ichthyophonus spp. There are granuloma-like lesions in all organs. visceral larva migrans see visceral larva migrans. visceral lymphomatosis see lymphoid leukosis. visceral nervous system see autonomic nervous system, visceral efferent system (above). visceral pain caused by inflammation of serous surfaces, distention of viscera and inflammation or compression of peripheral nerves. The pain caused by stretching of the wall of a hollow viscus is often intermittent because of its alternating relaxation and spasm in response to distention. visceral patterning the property in tissues of locating themselves in particular sites and with the appropriate three-dimensional shape. visceral receptors receptors in mucosae are sensitive to pH, slight touch, in ruminants there are sensors which recognize distention with or without gas. visceral larva migrans Parasitology A condition of children infected by GI tract parasites of dogs–Toxocara canis or cats–T cati; after ingestion, eggs hatch into larvae in the intestine, burrow through the GI wall
and migrate elsewhere–eg, liver, lung, brain, eye, and other organs, causing inflammation and tissue damage as they migrate Clinical Self-limited Sx–eg, fever, lung complaints–cough and wheezing, seizures, hive-like rashes, ↓
visual acuity, periorbital edema, strabismus. See Toxocara spp. How to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit webmaster's page for free fun content. |
