virus interference Protection of cells against virus infection, as a result of prior virus infection of neighbouring cells. This stimulates the production of proteins, called INTERFERONS, which become attached to the membranes of other cells and prompt them to produce enzymes which interfere with replication of subsequent viral invaders. Interferons also stimulate killer LYMPHOCYTES to attack and destroy cells which have been invaded with viruses.
