Vincent's Stomatitis

stomatitis /sto·ma·ti·tis/ (sto″mah-ti´tis) pl. stomati´tides   Generalized inflammation of the oral mucosa.
angular stomatitis  perlèche.
aphthous stomatitis  recurrent aphthous s.
gangrenous stomatitis  see noma.
herpetic stomatitis  an acute infection of the oral mucosa with vesicle formation, due to the herpes simplex virus.
mycotic stomatitis  thrush.
recurrent aphthous stomatitis  a recurrent stomatitis of unknown etiology characterized by the appearance of small ulcers on the oral mucosa, covered by a grayish exudate and surrounded by a bright red halo; they heal without scarring in 7 to 14 days.
ulcerative stomatitis  stomatitis with shallow ulcers on the cheeks, tongue, and lips.
Vincent's stomatitis  necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis.

Vincent's stomatitis
Etymology: Henri Vincent, French physician, 1862-1950; Gk, stoma, mouth, itis, inflammation
a painful bacterial infection of the mouth and gums causing ulceration (gingivitis). See acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis.

Trench Mouth
A form of gingivitis, first described in World War I when it was common among soldiers
Aetiology Opportunistic overgrowth of oral flora, resulting in painful ulcers, most common in young adults
Risk factors Poor oral hygiene, poor nutrition, infections, smoking, emotional stress
