vinca alkaloids

alkaloid /al·ka·loid/ (al´kah-loid″) any of a group of organic basic substances found in plants, many of which are pharmacologically active, e.g., atropine, caffeine, morphine, nicotine, quinine, and strychnine.
ergot alkaloids  a group of chemically related alkaloids either derived from ergot or synthesized; some cause ergotism while others are medicinal.
vinca alkaloids  alkaloids produced by the common periwinkle plant (Vinca rosea); two, vincristine and vinblastine, are used as antineoplastic agents.

vinca alkaloids [vin´kah]
a group of cytotoxic alkaloids extracted from the Madagascar periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus G. Don or Vinca rosea L.) and used as antineoplastic agents; they are cell cycle specific for the M phase of cell division and disrupt the microtubules that form the spindle apparatus. The group includes vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine, and vinorelbine tartrate.

vinca alkaloids
a group of alkaloids, including vinblastine and vincristine, extracted from the periwinkle plant (Vinca rosea), which arrest cell division in metaphase by disrupting the microtubules that form the spindle apparatus; used as antineoplastic agents.
