n.
A composite sensory nerve that emerges from the brainstem at the cerebellopontine angle, innervates the receptor cells of the membranous labyrinth, and consists of two major anatomically and functionally distinct components: the vestibular nerve and the cochlear nerve. Also called acoustic nerve, eighth cranial nerve.
