Algunos tipos de VPH estan asociados con verrugas genitales, que presentan considerable morbilidad, y con malignidades no cervicales dificiles de tratar, como el cancer vulvar, peneal, anal y orofaringeo, que se evitan con mayor eficacia mediante vacunas.
Estudios sugieren que el Cancer Cervical se puede desarrollar por la existencia del VPH en el area afectada, generalmente causado por los tipos de alto riesgo: 6, 11, 16 y 18 (las dos primeras causan verrugas genitales y las dos siguientes pueden producir cancer).
Existen dos tipos de VPH, el 6 y el 11, los cuales son notorios por la aparicion de verrugas en el area de los genitales (como el pene, vulva o en el utero).
