[ver′ō·sī′tō·tok′sin]
either of two toxins found in certain strains of Shigella dysenteriae and Escherichia coli, causing a type of hemolytic uremic syndrome. Humans are infected by ingesting undercooked meat, unpasteurized milk, and foods contaminated with cattle feces.
