Venezuelan equine encephalitis
An alphavirus infection first identified in a sick horse in Venezuela in 1938, which occurs as an epizootic infection in central and northern South America; most exposed humans develop flu-like Sx; ±4%, especially adolescents, develop encephalitis Mortality Up to 35% in the young; < 10% in adults Management Supportive. Cf Eastern equine encephalitis, Western equine encephalitis.

The core of the ArV system is an engineered, weakened form of Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus (VEE).
In one promising series of experiments, the researchers generated a self-replicating RNA molecule from a modified Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus and used it to carry an Ebola or Marburg virus gene that encodes a glycoprotein.
