variable deceleration
Obstetrics A fetal heart response that is asynchronous with respect to uterine contractions; the curves of VDs on the fetal heart monitor are angled and saw-toothed and may be caused by compromised placental blood flow–eg, umbilical cord compression and, like late decelerations, may signify delivery-related difficulties.
