tunica /tu·ni·ca/ (too´nĭ-kah) pl. tu´nicae [L.] a tunic; in anatomy, a general term for a membrane or other structure covering or lining a body part or organ.
tunica adventi´tia the outer coat of various tubular structures, made up of connective tissue and elastic fibers. tunica adventi´tia vaso´rum t. externa vasorum. tunica albugi´nea a dense, white, fibrous sheath enclosing a part or organ. tunica conjuncti´va the conjunctiva. tunica dar´tos the thin layer of subcutaneous tissue underlying the skin of the scrotum, consisting mainly of the dartos muscle. tunica exter´na an outer coat or layer. tunica exter´na vaso´rum the outer, fibroelastic coat of the blood vessels. tunica fibro´sa fibrous coat; an enveloping fibrous membrane. tunica inter´na an inner coat or layer. tunica in´tima vaso´rum the innermost coat of blood vessels. tunica me´dia vaso´rum the middle coat of blood vessels. tunica muco´sa the mucous membrane lining of various tubular structures. tunica muscula´ris the muscular coat or layer surrounding the tela submucosa in most portions of the digestive, respiratory, urinary, and genital tracts. tunica pro´pria a proper coat or layer of a part, as distinguished from an investing membrane. tunica sero´sa the membrane lining the external walls of the body cavities and reflected over the surfaces of protruding organs; it secretes a watery exudate. tunica vagina´lis tes´tis the serous membrane covering the front and sides of the testis and epididymis. tunica vasculo´sa a vascular coat, or a layer well supplied with blood vessels.
