The two species of Hyrax commonly found in East Africa are: 1) Rock Hyrax or Dassie (Procavia capensis) 2) Tree Hyrax or Dassie (Dendrohyrax arboreus) Hyraxes (Dassies) form an order by themselves, and in spite of their rodent-like appearance, they are more closely related to the elephant than to any other ungulates.
Other Non-Timber Products From Central African Forests Animals hunted or gathered for meat include the grasscutter Thyronomus swinderianus, tree hyrax Dendrohyrax arboreus, grey duiker Sylvicapra grimmia, bushbuck Tragelophus scriptus, bushpig Potamochoerus porcus, spot-nosed monkey Cercopithecus ascenius, and various snails, lizards, snakes, turtles, termites, caterpillars, and squirrels.
