Toxocara /Tox·o·ca·ra/ (tok?so-kar´ah) a genus of nematode parasites found in the dog (T. ca´nis) and cat (T. ca´ti); both species are sometimes found in humans. Toxocara a genus of nematode parasites in the family Ascarididae. Toxocara canis the adults are found in the small intestine of the dog and fox; infection is via oral, transmammary and transplacental routes; the larvae migrate through tissues, including to the fetus where they establish a prenatal infection, eventually passing through the lungs and then to the alimentary tract. In hosts other than the dog and fox migration in abnormal tissues occurs and the life cycle is not completed. Is the cause of ocular and visceral larva migrans in humans. Toxocara cati the adults are found in the small intestine of domestic and wild cats. Larvae pursue a migratory course through tissues but intrauterine infection of the fetus does not occur. Toxocara pteropodis found in flying fox bats. Toxocara vitulorum occurs in the small intestine of cattle, buffalo and in sheep and goats. Calves are infected via the milk of the dam.
