lipoic acid /lipo·ic ac·id/ (lip-o´ik) a necessary cofactor for several enzyme complexes involved in the oxidative decarboxylation of keto acids, where it occurs in the form lipoamide. It is used as a dietary supplement for its antioxidant properties.

An organic acid produced by cells of certain microorganisms and essential to oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate to acetyl-CoA during metabolism. Also called factor II.

a bacterial growth factor found in liver and yeast.

lipoic acid
a vitamin prosthetic group in enzymes involved in oxidative decarboxylation of keto acids such as 2-oxoglutarate and pyruvate. Called also α-lipoic acid, thioctic acid.
