thioester /thio·es·ter/ (-es´ter) a carboxylic acid and a thiol group in ester linkage, e.g., acetyl coenzyme A. thioester [thī′ō·es′tər] an important group of biologic chemicals formed by the hydrosulfides (or mercaptans or thiols) and carboxylic acids and identified by a bond between the acyl carbonyl carbon and the thiol sulfur.
