thermoluminescent dosimetry
[-lo̅o̅′mines′ənt]
Etymology: Gk, thermē + L, lumen, light; Gk, dosis, something given, metron, measure
a method of measuring the ionizing radiation to which a person is exposed by means of a device that contains a radiation-sensitive crystalline material. The material stores the radiation's energy by changing structure. When the material is heated at some later time, it releases the energy as ultraviolet or visible light. The light emitted is detected by a photomultiplier tube that generates an electric signal whose magnitude reflects the amount of ionizing radiation originally received.

thermoluminescent dosimetry (thur´mōloomines´nt dōsim´trē),
n the determination of the amount of radiation to which a thermoluminescent material has been exposed. This is accomplished by heating the material in a specially designed instrument that relates the amount of luminescence emitted from the material to the amount of radiation exposure.

Film dosimeters are known to be notoriously susceptible to various environmental effects such as temperature and humidity, and since the data show some extreme variations that are unexplained, the decision to replace film with thermoluminescent dosimetry for perimeter monitoring was not difficult.
