Cytology A system for reporting results from pap smears, which provides a uniform format for cervical and vaginal cytologic specimens, classifying noninvasive lesions and standardizes the lexicon for cervical/vaginal cytology reports, providing clinically relevant information. Similar to the Pap report and the Bethesda System, this reporting format allows physicians to have administrative staff separate pathology reports requiring their immediate attention from others that do not.
Coded answer sheets have diagnostic menus using terminology modified from the Bethesda System and grouped into 3 selection series: the 000 series for unsatisfactory slides; the 100 series for within normal limits (WNL) and benign cellular changes (BCC), including infections and reparative conditions; and the 200 series for epithelial cell abnormalities and carcinoma (see Table 1).
The ThinPrep Imaging System (Imager) is a device that uses computer imaging technology to assist in primary cervical cancer screening of ThinPrep(R) Pap Test slides for the presence of atypical cells, cervical neoplasia, including its precursor lesions, and carcinoma, as well as all other cytologic criteria as defined by The Bethesda System 2001.
