benzonatate /ben·zo·na·tate/ (ben-zo´nah-tāt) an antitussive that reduces the cough reflex by anesthetizing the stretch receptors in the respiratory passages, lungs, and pleura.
benzonatate [benzō′nətāt] a nonopiate antitussive. indication It is prescribed to suppress the cough reflex. contraindication Known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. adverse effects Hypersensitivity reactions, such as bronchospasm, laryngospasm, and cardiovascular collapse, may occur and may be serious. Vertigo, sedation, headache, and constipation may sometimes occur. benzonatate (benzon´ n brand name: Tessalon; drug class: antitussive, nonnarcotic; action: inhibits cough reflex by anesthetizing stretch receptors in respiratory system; uses: nonproductive cough relief. benzonatate a non-narcotic antitussive drug that depresses cough without affecting respiration.
