tensor tympani
[ten′sər tim′pə·nē]
a muscle originating in the cartilaginous portion of the auditory tube and inserting in the manubrium of the malleus. It functions to tense the tympanic membrane during loud noises.

The eardrum is a cone-shaped piece of skin that is around 10mm wide which is held rigid and taut by the tensor tympani muscle so that any part of it can react to a sound wave.
