tenofovir /te·no·fo·vir/ (tĕ-no´fo-vir″) an antiretroviral agent that inhibits reverse transcriptase; used as t. disoproxil fumarate in the treatment of HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus-1) infection.

contraindication Known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use.
adverse effects Common adverse effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, and abdominal pain.

tenofovir [tĕ-no´fo-vir″]
an antiretroviral agent that inhibits the viral enzyme reverse transcriptase and so inhibits replication of retroviruses; used as tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in the treatment of HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus-1) infection.

This growth was driven primarily by Gilead's antiviral franchise, including the strong growth of Atripla[R] (efavirenz 600 mg/ emtricitabine 200 mg/ tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg) sales due primarily to the continued uptake of Atripla in the United States and the recent launches in certain European countries, as well as the continued growth of Truvada[R] (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) sales in the United States and Europe.
The Public Patent Foundation (New York, NY) said that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has rejected four key HIV/AIDS drug patents held by Gilead Sciences (Foster City, CA) that relate to the drug known generically as tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), a key weapon in the battle against\ HIV/AIDS.
The Food and Drug Administration on July 12 announced the approval of Atripla, a fixed-dose combination of three antiretroviral drugs: efavirenz (Sustiva), emtricitabine (Emtriva), and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (Viread).
