Whenever a cell divides, its telomeres - a region of repetitive, protectetive DNA at the end of a chromosome - slightly wear away.
And separate research had shown that telomeres shorten at a higher rate when exposed to toxins such as radiation or cigarette smoke.
She shares the prize with Jack Szostak of Harvard Medical School in Boston, who teamed with Blackburn to find that telomeres from Tetrahymena prevented degradation of yeast chromosomes.
