Tasmanian devil
the world's largest surviving carnivorous marsupial, found only in the Australian island state, Tasmania, where it is common. The size of a small dog, it is noted for its rowdy, nocturnal behavior and threatening appearance and sounds. Called also Sarcophilus harrisi.

Tasmanian devil facial tumor disease
tumors first appear in and around the mouth, face and neck but can be found elsewhere in the body. Large, disfiguring growths interfere with eating and the condition is fatal within 3 to 8 months. It first appeared in the mid-1990s and has spread widely, greatly reducing the population of Tasmanian devils. Tumors are infective; the agent is believed to be clones transmitted by allograft.

The disease only affects Tasmanian Devils, and causes them to grow large tumors (lumps) on their faces that eventually make it impossible for them to eat.
Because of this cancer, the number of Tasmanian devils has recently plummeted.
The government has also backed a plan to build an "insurance population" of healthy Tasmanian devils at wildlife reserves, zoos and other protected areas.
