A cluster of metabolic abnormalities, including insulin resistance, high blood levels of triglycerides, low blood levels of HDL-cholesterol, and obesity, that increase the risk of chronic diseases such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, and diabetes. Also called metabolic syndrome.
