1. pertaining to or of the nature of a symptom. The word symptom is not used in veterinary medicine because the subjective sensations of our patients are not known to us. However, because there is no comparable word relating to clinical sign, the principal means by which veterinarians arrive at diagnoses, it is customary to use the word symptomatic in this context, that is as pertaining to or in the nature of a clinical sign.
