English physician who advocated the Hippocratic ideals of observation and experience in medicine, and recorded detailed firsthand accounts of numerous maladies, including gout, malarial fever, measles, dysentery, hysteria, and Sydenham's chorea.

45pm Southeastern service from London Victoria to Rochester split from the rear five cars as it left Sydenham Hill station.
As the train service between Victoria and Sydenham Hill, near South Dulwich, took on the appearance of half-hourly raceday specials, a full house of around 500 people, including several standing, paid tribute to an administrator whose popularity stretched way beyond the normal boundaries of a professional career.
The images show the palace after it was relocated from Hyde Park, central London, where it hosted the Great Exhibition in 1851, to Sydenham Hill, south-east London.
