Sun Protective Factor
Commonly abbreviated SPF. The ratio of the length of exposure to the sun required to produce a given level of erythaema before the application of sunscreen to the length of exposure required to produce such erythema after the application of sunscreen

The sun protective factor (SPF) numbering system (2-15) was also introduced.
Rosen recommended that people - especially those with fair skin - wear hats, long sleeves and sunscreens with a sun protective factor of at least 15.
