sulfite oxidase /sul·fite ox·i·dase/ (ok´sĭ-dās) an oxidoreductase that catalyzes the oxidation of sulfite to sulfate as well as the detoxification of sulfite and sulfur dioxide from exogenous sources. It is a mitochondrial hemoprotein containing molybdenum; deficiency results in progressive neurologic abnormalities, lens dislocation, and mental retardation.
