sulfamethoxazole /sul·fa·meth·ox·a·zole/ (-meth-ok´sah-zol) a sulfonamideantibacterial and antiprotozoal, particularly used in acute urinary tract infections.

A sulfonamide antibiotic that is used especially in combination with trimethoprim to treat bacterial urinary tract infections and other infectious conditions, such as malaria.

sulfamethoxazole (sul´fmethok´-szōl),
n brand names: Gamazole, Gantanol, Urabak;
drug class: sulfonamide;
action: interferes with bacterial biosynthesis of proteins by competitive antagonism of paraaminobenzoic acid (PABA);
uses: treatment of urinary tract infections, lymphogranuloma venereum, and systemic infections.

sulfamethoxazole
an antibacterial sulfonamide, especially useful in acute urinary tract infections and in infections of wounds and soft tissues. Commonly combined with trimethoprim.
