When exploring suicidality in my physician patients, I have been struck by the elaborate research and planning that underlie the suicide plans of physicians.
In the United States, the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System tracks national trends in adolescent problematic behaviors and examines such pertinent issues as sadness/hopelessness, serious consideration of a suicide attempt, making a suicide plan, and suicide attempts, both requiring medical attention and not (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2005).
