stylohyoideus [stī′lōhī·oi′dē·əs] Etymology: Gk, stylos, pillar, hyoeides, U-shaped one of four suprahyoid muscles, lying anterior and superior to the posterior belly of the digastricus. It is a slender muscle that arises from the styloid process and inserts into the hyoid bone. It serves to draw the hyoid bone up and back. Also called stylohyoid bone.
