[stī′lōhī·oi′dē·əs]
Etymology: Gk, stylos, pillar, hyoeides, U-shaped
one of four suprahyoid muscles, lying anterior and superior to the posterior belly of the digastricus. It is a slender muscle that arises from the styloid process and inserts into the hyoid bone. It serves to draw the hyoid bone up and back. Also called stylohyoid bone. Compare digastricus, geniohyoideus, mylohyoideus.
