A chronic condition caused by gastroesophageal reflux, characterized by heartburn, acid indigestion, and sometimes reflux esophagitis.

A disorder of the lower end of the esophagus, caused by stomach acid flowing backward into the esophagus and irritating the tissues.

n a backflow of the contents of the stomach into the esophagus that is often the result of incompetence of the lower esophageal sphincter. Gastric juices are acid and therefore produce burning pain in the esophagus and possibly demineralize the teeth.
