Staircasing
A manoeuvre once used in rescue breathing, in which the rescuer’s exhalation—victim’s inhalation—was performed in steps rather than in longer waves of breathing

The idea was to encourage and increase the pre-degree students' confidence about approaching lecturers; develop their assertiveness when inquiring about their grades and course content; get them to be proactive in their study habits, and supportive and encouraging of each other; and, most importantly, get the students to think, not only of completing the pre-degree programme, but of staircasing on to the degree.
Once they have moved in, many shared ownership customers go on to buy further shares in their homes from the housing associations - this process is commonly called staircasing.
