Staircase Ventilation

    0.01 sec.
Staircase Ventilation
A form of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) used in early cardiac arrest, in which the lungs are prevented from fully collapsing—exhalation—in order to ‘recruit’ collapsed or fluid-filled alveoli, thereby increasing arterial PO2

staircase ventilation
A form of PEEP, used in early cardiac arrest, where the lungs are prevented from fully collapsing–exhalation, in order to 'recruit' collapsed or fluid-filled alveoli, thereby ↑ arterial PO2; since a prolonged ↑ in intrathoracic pressure can both stop a weakly beating heart and, by distending the stomach, predispose to regurgitation, PEEP is 'stepped-down' as quickly as possible. See PEEP, Step-down therapy.
