Spo·ro·zo·a (spôr-z) or Spo·ro·zo·e·a (-z-)
n.
A large class of parasitic protozoa, most of which reproduce sexually and asexually in alternate generations by means of spores. They are frequently transmitted by bloodsucking insects to different hosts, where they cause many serious diseases, such as malaria and coccidiosis.

Etymology: Gk, sporos + zoon, animal
a class of parasite in the phylum Protozoa that is characterized by the absence of any external organs of locomotion. Included in this class are the genera Toxoplasma and Plasmodium.

Human parasites are classified in five major subdivisions: 1) Protozoa (ameba, flagellates, ciliates, sporozoans, and coccidia); 2) Platyhelminthes or flatworms (cestodes and trematodes); 3) Acanthocephala or thorny-headed worms; 4) Nematoda or round worms; and 5) Arthropoda (insects, spiders, mites, and ticks).
