completely marine, aquatic flightless bird inhabiting only the southern hemisphere. There are six genera, all of them gregarious, monogamous and piscivorous, including Aptenodytes and Megadyptes in the order Sphenisciformes. Varieties include black-footed, pigeon-toed.
