A crystalline acid occurring in bile and formed through the conjugation of cholic acid and glycine.

Etymology: Gk, glykys, sweet; L, acidus, sour
a substance in bile, formed by glycine and cholic acid, that aids in digestion and absorption of fats. Glycocholic acid is used as a food additive and an emulsifying agent. Also called cholylglycine.

glycocholic acid
a conjugated form of one of the bile acids that yields glycine and cholic acid on hydrolysis.
