a method of obtaining subjects for a study by soliciting names of potential subjects from those participating in the study.

Snowball Sampling
A popular term for a method used to obtain subjects for a study in which the initial cohort is small; in SS, participants are asked to name acquaintances who might be willing to participate in the study

The author got involved in a number of Los Angeles organizations for older lesbians and gay men and chose her snowball sample through the contacts she made.
A standard textbook on the subject, Social Network Analysis, by John Scott, puts it this way: "A snowball sample, of course, is not a random sample: the structure that is discovered is, in fact, 'built in' to a snowball sampling method itself.
