Etymology: ME, smellen + AS, sealt
aromatized ammonium carbonate to which may be added ammonia. It is used as a stimulant to arouse a person who has fainted.

Nay, pass the smelling salts to the town's Historical Commission chairman.
WEST BROM centre-back Jonas Olsson has escaped FA punishment following a clash which left West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green requiring smelling salts.
