A chronic disease that occurs in children and is characterized by massive painless cervical lymphadenopathy that is the result of distension of the lymphatic sinuses by macrophages containing ingested lymphocytes.

[FIGURE 1 OMITTED] The term sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) was introduced by doctors Rosai and Dorfman in 1969 as a well-defined clinicopathologic entity that is now widely known as Rosai-Dorfman disease.
Other conditions with a prominent inflammatory background include sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (Rosai-Dorfman disease) in the CNS, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, primary CNS extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type, and lymphoplasma cell-rich meningioma.
