Inflammation of the paranasal sinuses caused by a difference between the pressure within the sinus cavities and the ambient pressure. Also called barosinusitis.

Etymology: Gk, aer + L, sinus, curve; Gk. itis
inflammation, edema, or hemorrhage of the frontal sinuses, caused by an expansion of air within the sinuses when the barometric pressure is decreased, as in an aircraft at high altitudes. Also called barosinusitis.

barosinusitis [bar″o-si″nŭ-si´tis]
a symptom complex due to differences in environmental atmospheric pressure and the air pressure in the paranasal sinuses.
