ferrous sulfate, an antianemia (hematinic) agent. See also iron. indication It is prescribed in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. contraindications Hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, hemolytic anemias, and hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients prohibit its use. adverse effects Among the most serious adverse effects are GI irritation, diarrhea, and constipation. ferrous containing iron in its plus-two oxidation state, Fe(II) (sometimes designated Fe2+). ferrous fumarate the anhydrous salt of a combination of ferrous iron and fumaric acid; used as a hematinic. ferrous gluconate a hematinic that is less irritating to the gastrointestinal tract than other hematinics, and generally used as a substitute when ferrous sulfate cannot be tolerated. ferrous selinite is insoluble and soils rich in iron oxide tend to be nontoxic because of the formation of this compound. ferrous sulfate the most widely used hematinic for the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia.
