Sexually Dimorphic Nucleus
A cluster of cells in the preoptic area (SDN:POA) of the hypothalamus, so named as the cluster is linked to sexual behaviour in animals; it is smaller in females than males

Effects on ER-[beta] cell number in the anteroventral periventricular nucleus (AVPV) were quantified; this sexually dimorphic nucleus of the brain is essential to female reproductive function.
Similar problems are reflected in the effort to identity a sexually dimorphic nucleus of the preoptic area of the hypothalamus in studies such as those of LeVay (1993); Gorski, Gordon, Shrune, and Southern (1978); and others.
In the late 1970's, it was reported that an aggregate of cells in the hypothalamus, later designated as the sexually dimorphic nucleus of the preoptic area (SDN-POA), was larger in male than in female rats.
