A series of indentations or erosions on a normally smooth margin of a structure.

Scalloping
Gastroenterology A descriptive term for the appearance of Candida oesophagitis, where there are irregular serrations, seen by a barium swallow
Imaging—bone, digits A descriptive term for a semilunar erosion at the ulnar aspect of the distal radius, seen in patients with advanced rheumatoid arthritis and caused by spontaneous rupture of the digital extensors; the ‘scallop’ is often more prominent, as it may be rimmed by an osteosclerotic margin
Imaging—bone, vertebrae A descriptive term for a gouged-edge appearance of vertebrae in certain pathological conditions; when the scalloping is anterior, it may be due to pressure from an aneurysm. Posterior scalloping is associated with spinal tumours, neurofibromatosis or communicating hydrocephalus
Imaging—chest A descriptive term for the tethering of the visceral to parietal pleura, seen in pneumothorax which develops 'over' prior lung disease
Pathology A descriptive term for the serration of colloid adjacent to the epithelial cells in thyroid acini, seen by low-power light microscopy of Hashimoto’s disease
