saphenous nerve block
achieved by injection of a local anesthetic onto the saphenous vein, proximal to the hock. Anesthesia is obtained mainly over the medial thigh and metatarsal region. Usually performed in the horse.

Cleveland Clinic, performed the first coronary bypass operation using the patient's native saphenous vein as an autograft.
Radiofrequency and laser ablation are alternatives to stripping of the greater saphenous vein (GSV).
In bypass surgery, grafts are taken from the saphenous vein in the patient's thigh and sewn to the coronary arteries to help improve blood flow to the heart, relieve severe chest pain and reduce the risk of heart attacks from blocked arteries.
