(in research) a sample of a group in which all factors or participants are not equally balanced or objectively represented.

First, the BRFSS is a telephone survey, so individuals with no telephones were excluded, which may result in a sampling bias.
Alternatively, infection in the dog population may have been local and patchy, and the apparent temporal differences in prevalence may reflect geographic sampling bias.
The variation in results may have been caused either by a temporal variation in sampling, or a sampling bias from gear.
