Rouleaux
The stacking up of red blood cells, caused by extra or abnormal proteins in the blood that decrease the normal distance red cells maintain between each other.

Etymology: Fr, cylinder
an aggregation of red cells in a roll formation that may be caused by abnormal proteins, as in multiple myeloma or macroglobulinemia, but is most often a microscopic artifact. Compare hemagglutination. See also erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

Hematology Stacks of RBCs in groups of 4–10 cells, likened to stacked coins; artifactual rouleaux occur in the thick area of any blood smear; true rouleaux formation occurs with ↑ protein, fibrinogen and globulins, ↑ ESR due to dextran and monoclonal gammopathies–myeloma, Waldenström's disease, cryoglobulinemia, sarcoidosis, cirrhosis.
