Rouleaux The stacking up of red blood cells, caused by extra or abnormal proteins in the blood that decrease the normal distance red cells maintain between each other. Mentioned in: Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate rouleaux [ro̅o̅lō′] sing. rouleau Etymology: Fr, cylinder an aggregation of red cells in a roll formation that may be caused by abnormal proteins, as in multiple myeloma or macroglobulinemia, but is most often a microscopic artifact.
