The surgical excision of both breasts in a woman at an increased risk of breast cancer because she is a carrier of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.

In one study of 223 women who underwent bilateral prophylactic and were followed for 6.6 years, no primary breast cancer was observed compared with 12 expected cases.
