rheumatism (rōōˑ·m·tiˈ·zm),
n an inflammatory condition of the joints, bursae, muscles, or ligaments; distinguished by a hindering of movement, pain, and a deterioration in at least one part of the musculoskeletal system. Examples include rheumatoid arthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, or systemic lupus erythematosus.
